Federation of Royal Colleges of Physicians of the UK

The Federation of Royal Colleges of Physicians of the United Kingdom (Federation) is a collection of three professional bodies (Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow and Royal College of Physicians London) which aims to improve the quality of patient care by continually raising medical standards.

The format of the Specialty Certificate Examination (SCE) is based on the MRCP(UK) model and features:

  • Best-of-five format with clinical scenarios
  • Two three-hour papers of 100 questions each

Additional features are:

  • One annual diet per specialty
  • Electronic test taken on a computer at a testing centre

Trainees in the UK will sit the SCE in their specialty in the penultimate year of their specialist training. It is envisaged that international doctors will sit this exam either after having obtained MRCP(UK) or as they near the end of their training.
