Divisional Written Examination

The Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) Divisional Written Examination tests a trainee’s knowledge in either Adult Medicine or Paediatrics & Child Health at the end of Basic Training to determine if they are ready for Advanced Training.

Examination Format

The RACP Divisional Written Examinations for Adult Medicine and Paediatrics & Child Health are both held once per year on the same day in February, in locations around Australia and New Zealand.

The Examinations include a Clinical Applications paper consisting of 100 questions (including 92 A-type Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) and eight Extended Matching Questions (EMQs) and a Medical Sciences paper with 70 questions (including 66 A-type MCQs and four EMQs) each. The Examinations are 6 hours duration divided as follows:

  • Clinical Applications paper – 3 hours with 10 minutes additional reading time
  • Break – 1 hour duration
  • Medical Sciences paper – 2 hours with 10 minutes additional reading time

Eligibility and Authorisation

To be eligible to sit the RACP Divisional Written Examination, you must have completed a minimum of 24 months of Basic Training. For the full eligibility requirements, please refer to the Basic Training Handbooks.

Before you can book a place in the 2018 RACP Divisional Written Examination you must have been authorised by the RACP to sit the examination. You will receive an invitation to register email from the RACP to confirm this.

Booking an Examination

Candidates will register for the Divisional Written Examination through the RACP and book the testing venue with Pearson VUE. You will receive your Authorisation–to–Test (ATT) email from Pearson VUE at the close of the RACP registration period. The ATT email will provide you with the instructions to book your venue.

Special Consideration Applications

Pre-exam

  • If you are affected by illness or other events (such as bereavement) leading up to the Examination, you are advised not to sit. If you choose to withdraw, you may be eligible for a refund under the Special Consideration for Assessment policy.
  • If you choose to sit you will not be offered a refund and your marks will not be adjusted.

Exam Day

  • If you are affected by a technical or procedural issue on Examination day you may apply for Special Consideration. You must submit this application before the release of results. Your marks or result will not be altered.
  • You cannot request any other form of review, reconsideration or appeal of Examination results, other than Special Consideration.

Changing Your Booking

If you have booked an Examination but wish to change the location of your exam, please reschedule your venue via Pearson VUE online.

If you have booked a place in an Examination and later wish to withdraw, you must contact the RACP directly and withdrawal fees may apply. Please refer to the Instructions to Candidates for more details of the withdrawal process and withdrawal fees.

Change of Contact Details

You must notify the RACP of any changes in your name or contact details immediately by updating your MyRACP record.

Examination Results

The RACP Divisional Written Examination results will be processed and issued by the RACP. Examination results will NOT be immediately available on the day of the examination. To view the results release dates please refer to the RACP website.

Sample Exam

Two sample exams have been developed - one for Adult Medicine and one for Paediatrics & Child Health - so that candidates will have the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the new delivery format ahead of the Divisional Written Examination.

Candidates who have been identified as potentially eligible for the RACP Divisional Written Examination will have access to both sample exams.
