University of Maryland University College selects Pearson VUE to Deliver End-of-Course Exams

BLOOMINGTON, Minn., April 2, 2009 — University of Maryland University College (“UMUC”), a premier provider of distance education, has selected Pearson VUE to provide proctored end-of-course exams. These exams will be delivered throughout the Pearson VUE-owned and -operated network of more than 200 Pearson Professional Centers and the expansive Pearson VUE® Authorized Test Center network throughout the United States and its territories, as well as military installations.

University of Maryland University College, headquartered in Adelphi, Maryland, is the second largest university in Maryland, serving 90,000 students and offering 132 undergraduate and graduate programs online and on-site. In addition, UMUC is the largest public university in the United States and one of the largest public providers of online higher education in the nation. UMUC boasts a 60-year history of service to the military and currently enrolls an estimated 60,000 military service members, dependents and veterans each year. The university offers face-to-face instruction at 21 locations throughout Maryland and educational services at more than 150 locations overseas, including in the Middle East. UMUC is accredited by the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and is a constituent institution of the University System of Maryland, an agency of the State of Maryland.

In addition to testing in Pearson VUE’s traditional test centers, UMUC will leverage Pearson VUE’s relationship with the U.S. military to enable students serving abroad to have a secure, proctored test taking experience. With test centers located on military bases globally, Pearson VUE has a blanket Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support (DANTES) that allows for the rapid installation of Pearson VUE Test Centers at any interested DANTES location.

“We found an ideal match in Pearson VUE,” said Gregory VonLehmen, Interim Provost, UMUC. “Pearson VUE provides a convenient, extensive test center network that exceeds the needs of our students. The security of the test centers, including those located on military bases, is the perfect complement to our distance education program. Utilizing the Pearson VUE infrastructure, U.S. military personnel and distance learners alike can earn post-secondary degrees while abroad or stateside.”

“We are pleased to be able to be able to expand our relationship with UMUC to provide a computer-based testing program to UMUC students,” said Robert Whelan, president and chief executive officer of Pearson VUE. “We are confident that UMUC students will enjoy the convenience of our secure test center network. Pearson VUE is committed to providing the most high-quality testing environment for our clients’ programs.”
