Washington State Office of the Insurance Commissioner Retains Pearson VUE for Examination and Licensure Services

BLOOMINGTON, Minn., March 19, 2009 — Pearson VUE, the computer-based testing business of Pearson, has announced that the Washington State Office of the Insurance Commissioner has selected Pearson VUE to continue administering its licensure examination program following a competitive bidding process. The new contract became effective March 1st and marks 20 years of uninterrupted service between Pearson VUE and the Office of the Insurance Commissioner.

The contract’s provisions consist of examination development and computer-based testing (CBT) administration, digital fingerprinting, and a wide-range of custom reporting services. Currently, Pearson VUE administers four major line exams (Life, Disability, Property & Casualty) along with eight limited lines to approximately 15,000 candidates each year for the agency.

Pearson VUE has administered Washington State’s insurance licensure examination program in computer-based format since 1989. In fact, Washington was the first Pearson VUE client to adopt computer-based testing technology. Over the years, Pearson VUE has established eight testing centers within the state—most of which have digital fingerprint capture capabilities. Pearson VUE also has added online exam registration and reporting services, implemented a secure file transfer protocol, and made other service enhancements to the program.

Art Valentine, vice president of professional services and general manager of regulatory services at Pearson VUE said, “For two decades now, we have worked diligently with the Office of the Insurance Commissioner to create a high-quality licensure program with a strong focus on content development, exam administration, and candidate satisfaction. This contract award gives us the opportunity to continue to make improvements in all facets of the Washington insurance program.”

Robert Whelan, president and chief executive officer of Pearson VUE added, “The decision by the Washington State Office of the Insurance Commissioner to renew our contract is a testament to our long history of providing first-rate, reliable service to their constituents. We are looking forward to many more years of collaboration and innovation.”
